In 1984, four-year-old Joey DiPaolo underwent heart surgery at a large hospital in Brooklyn. As a result of a blood transfusion, DiPaolo contracted the AIDS virus. In this February 13, 1991 complaint, DiPaolo's parents claim the blood center did not adequately screen blood donors. They also claim that doctors did not advise them of the option of deferring the surgery until a blood test for the AIDS virus was available.
